Washington Needs To Save a Cent to Annul Marriage Penalty Tax Stop Taxing My Wife Away - As Uncle Sam's tax deadline fast approaches and taxpayers get ready to hand him about 40 percent of their paycheck, Republicans are battling to relieve 42 million taxpayers who're forced to pay about $1,400 more in federal taxes solely because they fell in love, and tied the knot. House GOP sponsors Jerry Weller (IL-11) and Dave McIntosh (IN-2) are teaming up with Republican leadership to stick a fork in this unfair tax, hiking the standard deduction for married couples "Today, the only form one can file to avoid the marriage tax penalty is paperwork for divorce," said Weller. "Keep the Change" -- Weller and McIntosh's new legislation, the Marriage Tax Penalty Elimination Act, is part of the Workhorse Republican Congress' strong commitment to returning more of Americans' hard-earned money to the taxpayers' pockets. Better Use: With "marriage penalty" savings, the average couple could pay their electric bill (which averages $153 a month) for 9 months, buy 1,308 gallons of gas at $1.07 a gallon, or buy 1,238 loaves of bread at $1.13 a loaf. ( For More Information www.rnc.org) ************************************************************************************************************************ FYI on AP Poll "(A) new poll by the Associated Press reveals that Republicans would do well to ignore the populist rantings of the Dick Gephardts and David Boniors and instead make the moral case for a single tax rate... When respondents to the survey were asked whether they favored the current progressive tax code or a flat rate for all earners, 51 percent opted for the latter. Only 39 percent said that rates should escalate with income.
